Challenge and Solution - Creating a Beautiful & Accessible Roll-In Shower for an ALS Patient

The Challenge

A client in the later stages of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) could no longer safely use his existing shower. His mobility had become severely limited, requiring his caregiver to assist with every aspect of bathing. A traditional shower setup was no longer feasible, and a safer, more accessible solution was urgently needed.

However, the client also had a personal request—he did not want his home to have a clinical or "handicapped-looking" bathroom. Understanding that his time was limited, he wanted the space to remain beautiful for his wife after he passed. This required a design that balanced functionality, safety, and aesthetics.

The Accessible Solution

To address the client’s needs, we built a custom roll-in shower, allowing his caregiver to safely roll him in for easy and comfortable bathing. Every element of the design was carefully chosen to provide accessibility without compromising elegance.

Key Features of the Roll-In Shower:

  • Barrier-Free Entry – A completely flush threshold ensured smooth access for the client’s shower chair.

  • Shower Nook – Built-in shelving provided a seamless and stylish way to store bath essentials without clutter.

  • Glide Bar & Hand-Held Shower – A height-adjustable glide bar paired with a pause-control hand-held showerhead and extra-long (6’) hose allowed for greater flexibility and ease of use.

  • Anti-Fungus, Anti-Microbial Weighted Shower Curtain – Designed to prevent water from escaping while maintaining hygiene and durability.

  • Collapsible Water Retainer – A low-profile, flexible barrier that kept water contained within the shower space. (This retainer is manufactured in the USA and sold worldwide for accessibility needs.)

A Lasting Legacy

Shortly after the project was completed, the client passed away. As per his wishes, we ensured that the shower remained a beautiful, functional space for his wife. After his passing, many of the accessible accessories were removed, and the former screw holes were filled to seamlessly match the existing tile. This allowed the bathroom to retain its elegance while honoring the needs of both the client and his family.

This project reflects our mission—to create spaces that enhance accessibility without sacrificing design. Every home is unique, and we take pride in delivering solutions that respect both the function and the aesthetic of each client’s space.
