Stroke is a type of cardiovascular disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood (and oxygen) it needs, so it starts to die.
Diagnosing a stroke can be accomplished by one of the following methods:
- Imaging tests give a picture of the brain similar to X-rays (CT Scan or CAT Scan)
- Electrical tests record the electrical impulses of the brain (EEG and Evoked Response)
- Blood flow tests show any problem that may cause changes in blood flow to the brain (Ultrasound)
Multiple Sclerosis is usually diagnosed in people between the ages of 20 and 50, with three times as many women as men acquiring the disease.
Approximately 400,000 Americans have Multiple Sclerosis, with possibly 10,000 new cases reported each year.
