Challenge and Solution - Improving Bathroom Accessibility for an Elderly Gentleman
The Challenge
A 6-foot-tall elderly gentleman with balance issues struggled to maintain stability while urinating and had difficulty rising from a low toilet. Additionally, as a left-handed individual, he required a support solution that aligned with his natural movements. His wife, who shared the bathroom, did not need the same accessibility features, making adaptability a key consideration.
The Accessible Solution
To enhance the client’s bathroom safety and usability, we implemented two key modifications that provided support without compromising aesthetics or functionality.
1. Fold-Up Grab Bar for Stability & Support
-
We installed a German-made 31” Fold-Up grab bar next to the toilet, offering crucial balance support while urinating and additional leverage when rising.
-
The hinged design allowed the grab bar to be folded up when not in use, ensuring convenience for his wife, who did not require the added support.
2. ToiletVator – Elevating the Toilet for Comfort
-
To address the difficulty of getting up from a low toilet, we installed a ToiletVator, a discreet spacer that raised the existing toilet by 3.5 inches.
-
Unlike bulky plastic risers, this seamless elevation solution allows the user to keep their original toilet seat, maintaining both comfort and aesthetics.
-
The paintable surface of the ToiletVator enables customization to match the toilet; however, in this case, the client opted to leave it as is.
Benefits of This Approach
✅ Enhanced Stability & Independence – The grab bar provided essential support for both standing and sitting, reducing fall risk.
✅ Space-Saving & Adaptable Design – The fold-up feature ensured the grab bar did not interfere when not needed.
✅ Discreet & Hygienic – Unlike plastic sit-on-top risers, the ToiletVator maintains the original toilet’s appearance and eliminates concerns over staining.
✅ Improved Accessibility Without Medicare-Style Equipment – This solution replaced the need for the unattractive, space-consuming three-in-one commodes provided by Medicare, which can also restrict walker or wheelchair movement in small bathrooms.
A Thoughtful & Practical Solution
By implementing functional yet elegant modifications, we helped this client regain confidence in using the bathroom safely while keeping the space comfortable for his wife. This project reflects our commitment to creating accessible, non-intrusive solutions that blend seamlessly into everyday living spaces.
